In May of 2003 the Potomac Speleological Club purchased about 2 acres of land in West Virginia, near the town of Dunmore, West Virginia. The property, about a half hour from Marlington and Cass, is ideally located as a base camp for caving trips to Friars Hole, Cass Cave, Simmons-Mingo, and a host of other caves.
The fieldstation is a large grassy field with plenty of camping space. Though it also has a small camper with electricity, users should always bring a tent and plan to camp. You should also bring water, as there is no potable water as yet on the site (though there is a portajohn).
Note also that there is a fee of $2.00 per night for PSC members, and $4.00 per night for nonmembers.
Directions from Washington, DC:
The fastest way is to take RT 33 to Franklin, then 220 south past Monterey to Rt 84 heading west. When Rt 84 reaches the town of Frost, turn right going north on Rt 92, go about a half mile, then make the first left on County Road 13. Stay on this about 2.5 miles, going right at the one fork along the way, until you reach the Lutz Fieldstation. (See map on the right.) The Fieldstation is on the north side of the road, just after you leave Seneca State Forest and right after you cross a stream. You will see two small trailers on the property.
All users should immediately pay their fee and sign the logbook in the main camper.
| You can set up your tents anywhere on the grass, but please do not drive your cars across the grass. Instead, park along the driveway, pointing in, as shown in the sketch. |
